Sports & athletes dealing with mental health issues

Presentation by Professor Nick Petrelia (Mohawk College)

Nick Petrella, a skilled hockey player as a youth, shared his personal experience with depression and anxiety during his life journey. Nick is the Health, Wellness and Fitness Program Co-ordinator at Mohawk College and a strength & conditioning coach and mental health advocate.

Nick's Vision:
"I envision a world where people who suffer from a mental illness are accepted and respected as heroes. I have a goal to create empathy and compassion in a world where we are too busy to care about others' well-being. Every 30 seconds, someone in the world dies by suicide as a result of depression. This shocking statistic can be reduced by simply talking about the reasons why the numbers are so alarming. Let me help you save a life today."

There were lots of questions and follow-up discussions. A very moving presentation!

The evening's agenda also included the presentation of KSA's $2,500 cheque to Kitchener Minor Hockey's Donna's Kids Program which provides assistance to ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy playing hockey with the KMHA

You're invited to come out and socialize with other community-minded sports enthusiasts at our dinner meetings. Just let us know you're coming so we can make appropriate seating arrangements. Email Adele Couchman
